Care for golden Lucky Bamboo
Light
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light.
- Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.
- Too little light can cause the leaves to fade or the plant to stretch.
Water
You can grow this plant in soil or water, but filtered or distilled water is recommended to prevent chemical burns from tap water.
- If grown in water: Ensure the roots are submerged and change the water every 1–4 weeks to prevent algae and bacteria growth.
- If grown in soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, but do not let it become soggy.
Container
- For water-grown plants, a transparent container with pebbles can be used to stabilize the stalks.
- For soil-grown plants, use a pot with drainage holes.
Fertilizer
Feed your plant sparingly with a diluted liquid fertilizer every few months during the growing season (spring and summer). Over-fertilizing can harm the plant.
Temperature and humidity
- Golden Lucky Bamboo does best in average room temperatures between 65–90°F (18–32°C).
- Avoid sudden temperature changes or placing the plant near air conditioning or heating vents.
- The plant thrives in humid conditions and can benefit from occasional misting if your indoor air is dry.
Pruning
Trim yellow or dead leaves as they appear to maintain the plant's appearance. The main stalk will not grow back, but offshoots can be trimmed to a few centimetres from the stem.
Common problems
- Yellowing stalks or leaves: This can be caused by excessive sunlight, poor water quality (using chlorinated tap water), over-fertilization, or root rot. Move the plant to a brighter spot with indirect light, switch to distilled water, and flush out excess fertilizer.
- Algae growth in water: Algae can grow if too much light reaches the water. Clean the container, replace the water, and consider an opaque pot.
- Soft or mushy stalks: This indicates root rot from overwatering or stagnant water. Remove the affected stalks and follow correct watering practices.
